Chemical Name: THYROID (THYE-roid)
Armour Thyroid is a thyroid hormone used to treat low thyroid levels. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
WARNING: Armour Thyroid must not be used to treat obesity because serious, even life-threatening, effects could occur. Excessive levels of thyroid hormone can cause irregular heartbeats, nervousness, weight loss, and insomnia. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking digoxin, digitoxin, digitalis, calcium, or anticoagulants. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. TRY TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE at the same time each day. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
CONTINUOUS USE OF THIS MEDICINE FOR A FEW WEEKS may be necessary to relieve symptoms of your condition. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR if you experience trembling or shaking hands, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, headache, change in appetite, diarrhea, weight loss, increased sweating, increased sensitivity to heat, increased heart rate, chest pain, or shortness of breath. THESE SYMPTOMS MAY MEAN THAT YOUR DOSE needs to be adjusted. Do not adjust your dose or stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Caution should be used in the elderly since they may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug. Who should NOT take Thyroid? Desiccated thyroid should not be taken by anyone who: - has an allergy to thyroid or to any of the ingredients of the medication (there are currently no known cases of allergy to desiccated thyroid itself)
- has certain uncorrected problems of the adrenal glands
- has untreated thyrotoxicosis (too much thyroid hormone in the blood)
Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention if any of the following occur: - chest pain
- signs of heart attack (e.g., chest pain, or pressure or squeezing sensation in the chest; anxiety; paleness; shortness of breath; pain spreading to shoulders, neck, and jaw)
Some people may experience side effects other than those listed. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while you are taking this medication. |
