About your treatment
Your doctor has ordered the drug chlorambucil to help treat your illness. The drug can be taken by mouth in tablet form.
This medication is used to treat:
- chronic lymphocytic leukemia
- some types of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas
- advanced Hodgkin's disease
This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Chlorambucil is in a class of drugs known as alkylating agents; it slows or stops the growth of cancer cells in your body. The length of treatment depends on the types of drugs you are taking, how well your body responds to them, and the type of cancer you have.
Other uses for this medicine
Chlorambucil also is used in the treatment of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, polycythemia vera, trophoblastic neoplasms, ovarian carcinoma, nephrotic syndrome, and various other diseases. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition.
Precautions
Before taking chlorambucil,
- tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to chlorambucil, melphalan (Alkeran), or any other drugs.
- tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially aspirin and vitamins.
- tell your doctor if you have a seizure disorder.
- do not have any vaccinations (e.g., measles or flu shots) without talking to your doctor.
Side effects
Side effects from chlorambucil are common and include:
- darkened and dry skin
- loss of appetite or weight
- diarrhea
- weakness
Tell your doctor if either of these symptoms is severe or lasts for several hours:
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- unusual bruising or bleeding
- black, tarry stools
- red urine
- cough
- sore throat
- congestion
- difficulty breathing
- fever
- dizziness
- seizures
- confusion
- chills
- shortness of breath
- rash
Storage conditions
Keep chlorambucil in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
In case of emergency/overdose
In case of overdose, call your local poison controlcenter at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsedor is not breathing, call local emergency services at911.
Special instructions
- Drink plenty of fluids and urinate frequently during your treatment.
