Classification
Antidotes, Detoxifying Agents & Drugs Used in Substance Dependence
Indications
Toaid smoking cessation; to reduce addictive behaviour & the various w/ drawal symptoms in nicotine-dependent smokers.
Dosage
Stop smoking completely when starting treatment. Use 1 patch of the corredt strength daily. Those smoing >20 cigarettes/day Start w/ Nicotinell TTS 30 followed by Nicotinell TTS 20 & finally Nicotinell TTS 10 for 3-4 wk each. Those smoking <20 cigarettes/day Start w/ Nicotinell TTS 20 followed by Nicotinell TTS 10 for 3-4 wk each. Total treatment duration <3 mth.
Contraindications
Nonsmokers, childn & occasional smokers. Acute MI unstable or worsening angina pectoris, severe cardiac arrhythmias, recent CVA, skin diseases. Pregnancy, lactation.
Precautions
Hypertension, stable againa pectoris, cerebrovascular disease, occlusive peripheral arterial diease, arrhythmias, heart failure, hyperthyroidism or diabetes mellitus, peptic ulcer, renal or hepatic impairment. Persistent skin reaction to the patch.
Adverse Reactions
Reaction at applicatio site (mild erythema or pruritus), headache, cold & fulelike symptoms, insomnia, nausea, myalgia & dizziness. Rarely: BP changes, other CNS effects & GI disturbances. |
